Why are we affiliated to the IEB?

The IEB is the Independent Examination Board that caters for the majority of private/independent schools of Southern Africa. Their main function is to provide Umalusi accredited examinations/assessments for Grade 12 (NSC). This examination is based on the National Curriculum, as set by the Department of Education.

Each of South Africa’s nine provinces has their own Board of Education which sets their exams. The IEB can be viewed as the Board of Education for a ‘tenth province’. All the different provinces have to adhere to the standards set out by Umalusi, which is the national watch dog of standards, as well as the standardisation of the expected outcomes achieved at the different levels.

Students writing the IEB examinations have acquired the necessary skills to successfully complete their tertiary studies. This statement is supported by a study that was conducted by The University of Cape Town.

The consistently high pass rate achieved by the IEB and the percentage of enterants into degree studies confirms the opportunities an IEB matric can create.

Universities from the Commonwealth countries favourably look at applications from IEB candidates because of the validity and reliability of the IEB’s results.

Apart from the assessment aspect, the IEB is also involved with the training of, and creating network opportunities for, teachers affiliated with the IEB. Annual User Group Conferences, Regional Conferences and Cluster meetings ensure that the above outcome is achieved.
